The other day, I led a teleseminar for gay guys who want to get unstuck in finances, career & relationships. One of the questions I posed was this:
Suppose two people go to a workshop. Both go thru the same exercises, they both learn the same information. The difference, though, is that one leaves the workshop and becomes wildly successful, while the other one goes home and doesn't really change in their lifestyle.
What is the critical difference between these two people? Any guesses?
The responses ranged from "It's due to their drive" or "it's their personality" or "one's smarter than the other."
After a few seconds, I revealed the answer: The difference depends on who each person hangs around with.
Then I shared this quote by Jim Rohn: "You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with."
Shock. Groan. Gasps. "Oh my god, I need some new friends!" were the responses.
Think about it. The essence of this quote really points to how the people we spend the most time with in our lives impact our lives. So the question to you is, who do you spend your time with?
If there's something that you want in your life that you don't currently have, one of the keys to getting it is to create an environment and community that supports what you want. If you want to be better at investing, learn from people who do well at investing. If you want to learn how to cook, watch tv programs where they demonstrate cooking instead of deciding to watch the sitcom re-run. If you want a relationship where the person shares your interests, hang out in the places that reflect your interests and meet people there.
Answer these questions:
- Who are you hanging around with?
- What are you feeding yourself with everyday?
- What kinds of tv programs and movies are you watching?
- What kinds of things do you read?
- Where are you spending most of your time?
Looking at the answers to these questions, are you creating an environment and community that supports you towards moving where you want to be?
Some food for thought.
I'd love to hear what you think. How true do you think this is? What do you do to create the environment that supports you? I'd love to know!
