After a while of sharing with me what they don't like about their jobs or how they'd really wish they could be doing something else, I ask them the magic question:
- What is making you stay in that job?
For a lot of them, this question stuns them. They become quiet. Many times, they answer, "I don't know."
After helping people for years on this issue of finding your right work, I've found that one of the biggest obstacles to people really going for their dreams, fully living their purpose and finding their right work is that it comes down to core beliefs.
I dig into this magic question until we uncover some of the core beliefs that keep them in their job. Here are some of the top core beliefs I've run across over and over again:
- I'm not going to find anything better if I leave my job.
- I'm at an age where it's too difficult to start over.
- I can't afford to give up my job. The money is good or just enough to keep me there.
- You can't make money doing what you love. If you do, you're really lucky.
A lot of people don't know that these core beliefs are operating in their psyche. It actually stops them from even considering any other options to their work.
This is why I've designed the "Finding Your Right Work" 5-week program to first address and uncover your underlying core beliefs.
In Week 1, participants go through an exercise where you look at over 60 core beliefs to see if any of these limiting ideas are operating in your life. You might not be aware that you have some old tapes playing in your head about what you think work should be.
This process that I've developed has given clients some big "a-ha's" about work they didn't even realize they believed. Once you get clear on your core beliefs, you can make a choice of whether or not they ultimately serve you.
Identifying and uprooting beliefs that don't serve you is like weeding a garden. You have to clear out the things that stop the garden of your life from flourishing.
For the other weeks of the program, we focus on getting clear on what makes your heart sing, and planting new seeds and beliefs that support your intention to do work that you love.
If you want to uproot some weeds in your garden, and start the path to finding your right work, check out the program.
The program starts next Thursday, October 23, 2014, from 7 PM to 8:15 PM, and runs for 5 weeks. It's a virtual program, meaning that you get to participate on the phone from the comfort of your home.
Here's to living your life with purpose and passion!
