![]() The other day I attended a goal-setting workshop for 2017. The facilitator asked us to pick one goal to work on. Here’s what I wrote down:
I thought to myself, this is a good sounding goal. There are a lot of respectable reasons I chose this as a goal:
But…as I looked at the goal, I realized I wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about it. I want to get fit, and running a marathon feels like a step in the right direction. At the same time, the goal I wrote down felt as if I were simply adding one more thing to my already busy to-do list. If you’re a person who makes new year’s resolutions or sets different goals for your life, you might have some goals on your list that feel like mine. They sound good on paper, but there’s still something else missing. So what do you do with a blah sounding goal? You can do what I did, and “juice” it up! Are you willing to try this out? If so, play along with me. Take a moment to think of a goal that you’d like to accomplish. It could be a goal for this week, this month, this quarter or this year. It could be related to your career, your finances, your health, your relationships, your spiritual growth, your travel, anything. Have you thought of a goal? Now, write it down. Read it over. As you look at it, exactly as you wrote it, rate it on a scale of 1 to 10 on how exciting and fun it sounds to you (1 is completely boring and feels like a chore, and 10 is outright fun, exciting and fabulous). If your goal isn’t resonating at a top level 10 of fun and excitement for you, that's perfectly fine. However, if you'd like to raise the energy and vibration of your goal, even by a little bit, here’s one question that you can ask:
As I sat in this workshop looking at my goal of running a marathon, I silently asked myself this one question. How can I make this goal more fun, more exciting and easier to accomplish? And the answer immediately came to me and lit me up!
When I wrote this new goal on my paper, my body got tingly. I sat up straighter in my chair and I felt a surge of energy as I imagined running through the Magic Kingdom with Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy cheering me on. In my heart, running through Disneyland sounds like a lot of fun. And with this picture in my mind, it feels a lot easier for me to do the training because I have this exciting goal in mind. What comes up for you when you think about how your goal can be more fun, more exciting and easier to accomplish? If nothing comes up quickly, take some time to sit with this question. Feel free to ask for suggestions from others in your life who are supportive of your dreams. Be open to hearing the answers from surprising and delightful places. And…if, after all this, your goal still doesn’t seem like there's any room for fun, then there might be some room to explore whether you want to have this as a goal in the first place. I believe that every one of us is meant to live our lives with joy and purpose, in our own unique ways. Where are you feeling the call for more joy in your life? I’d love to hear your thoughts and musings about making your goals more juicy. If you’re like many people, you probably started off 2017 with lots of anticipation and inklings of possibility.
“2017 is going to be a great year! It’ll be amazing and everything is going to be fabulous!” The challenge for a lot of people, though, is keeping up the energy of possibility. For example, last week, my gym was packed with people exercising and sweating into their new year’s resolutions to be fit and healthy. I had to wait to get on a treadmill. This week, I had a few treadmills to choose from. The crowd had thinned out quite a bit. It’s not that people don’t want to get fit and healthy. It’s that making dramatic changes to your life often rubs up against how you’ve been used to living your life. So what can you do to raise and keep up the energy of possibility in your life in 2017? Here are three questions that can help. 1. What is your dream for 2017? You can focus on a particular area of your life, like your health, relationships, career, finances, your home, travel, or your personal growth, or you can leave it open to see what comes up. Write it out. Give yourself the space to dream of possibilities. 2. As you think about your dream, what is exciting to you about this? If you’re dreaming of a trip to Spain, for example, ask yourself what is exciting to you about taking that trip. Or if you’re imagining the possibility of being in a loving romantic relationship, what about it is inspiring to you? Really take the time to delve into your big “why.” Why do you want to do that? Why do you want to have that? What does your dream give you? And here's something to watch for: If you're dream doesn't excite you, then it might not be your dream. It might be someone else's dream that you've taken on as your own. 3. For those dreams that excite you, what is one small thing you can do that gets you closer to that dream? If you’ve been wanting to live a more healthy lifestyle, you don’t need to register for a 26.2 mile marathon if you’ve never run before. You can always start small. Maybe this week it’s asking a friend to go on a nature hike with you this weekend. Or perhaps it’s choosing to eat something green and leafy. After you take that first small step, celebrate that you did something different, and especially something that is getting you closer to your dreams. Then ask, what’s another small step you can take, and go and do that. One of the best ways to keep up the energy of your dreams is to figure out a way to have your dreams at the forefront of your mind. One of my favorite ways to do that is by creating a vision board. (You can read more about vision boards on my blog post.) For your coaching assignment this week, take some time to contemplate and answer these questions. Inside you is a dream that is wanting to express. Are you taking the time to listen? How will you honor your dreams today? I’d love to hear how you're thinking about your dreams and keeping up the energy of possibility in 2017. Please leave a comment below. ![]()
