A valuable life lesson from my mom

My mom is a gardener, not by profession but completely through love.

Being her son, I’ve known this for quite some time, but in the last few days I got to see first hand her love for gardening shine through.

Last weekend I visited my mom in the San Francisco Bay Area. As is usual with many kids who visit their parents, my mom asked me to help her run some errands.

First, we stopped by the 99-cent store because she wanted to get a few terra cotta plant pots that were on sale.

We brought the cart down the aisle and she eyed the pots. She took a stack of four, examined them to make sure they weren’t broken and then handed them to me to put in the cart.

Then she looked at another stack of four, examined them just like before, and gave them to me. This went on as she looked at some different kinds of plant pots.

In total, we ended up getting over 50 plant pots!

Seeing her smile, I knew she was in her element. Gardening is her deep passion. She intimately knows what her plants, flowers and trees need, and she attends to them as if love were instinctually guiding her every move.

Later, we headed to Lowe’s Home Improvement Store because she needed some dirt.

Once we walked in, the salesperson greeted us with her “Welcome to Lowe’s!” My mom immediately replied, “Where can I find the cactus dirt?”

After being directed to the big bags of dirt at the farther end of the garden center, I asked my mom, “Why cactus dirt? How is that different from any other kind of dirt?”

She stated authoritatively, “Cactus dirt doesn’t absorb the water like regular dirt, so the plants don’t get overwatered.”

We picked up 2 big heavy bags of cactus dirt, and added another heavy bag of steer manure that she would use for fertilizer.

As we made our way towards the cashier, my mom stopped to look at the small succulents and different kinds of cactus on display. She grabbed two of them and had a big smile on her face as she placed them in the cart.

“I don’t have these. I’ll add them to my collection,” she beamed.

Seeing her smile, I knew she was in her element.

Gardening is her deep passion. She intimately knows what her plants, flowers and trees need, and she attends to them as if love were instinctually guiding her every move.

What if everyone in this world lived their lives a little bit more engaged in their deep passion?

Whether or not you realize it, you also have a deep passion in your life.

Your passion may not be gardening, but it may be technology, or cooking, or acting, or finances, or speaking, or spiritual growth, or something else that sparks your joy.

Your passion shows up as those things that you’re naturally drawn to engage or learn more about.

You find evidence of it in the time you spend, sometimes to the point where you don't realize where all the time went.

People close to you remark how natural it seems for you, and you think to yourself, “Doesn’t everyone know how to do this?”

What if everyone in this world lived their lives a little bit more engaged in their deep passion?

Imagine the joy lighting up in each person!

When you engage your passion, your joy begins to ground your everyday interactions.

With this in mind, here’s your coaching assignment for this week:

  • Take a moment to scan your life to find evidence of your deep passions in life.
Where do you spend your time? What are you drawn to engage or learn more about? What do people close to you say seems so natural to you? It’s okay if you have more than one passion that comes up.

  • Now, pick one of those passions and take stock of how you engaged your passion.
Look at this last week, or last month. Did you do anything? Did it feel like the right amount or did you want a little bit more?

  • After reflecting on this, consider one way that you might want to honor your passion this week.
This could include a silent prayer of gratitude and blessing for being able to engage in your passion. Or it could be taking one step to engage a little bit more deeply with it.

At the heart of this week’s assignment is expanding your own awareness and engagement to how life is calling forth your joy.

Here is the spiritual truth underneath all this:

Life is ever seeking a greater expression of Itself, and your passion is the vehicle by which Life can more easily flow in, through and as you.

A couple days after I flew back to Los Angeles, my mom sent me a text with a picture of all the pots we bought now filled with dirt and succulents.

Along with the picture was a simple message.

“I need more pots.”

All I could do is laugh. Gardening truly is her life's passion.

Her joy is an inspiration and wake-up call to both me and to you.

Where in your life are you being called to fill your own pots with your passion?

Abundant Blessings and Namaste.

A different way to approach Love

For Valentine’s Day, I’d like to offer you a different way to approach Love.

Instead of looking to Love as material goods that are given or received (like chocolate candy in a heart-shaped box or a bouquet of red roses)…

Instead of looking to Love as a feeling that you share with someone (like saying I love you to your partner, dear friend or animal companion)…

Instead of looking for a kind of Love that makes you feel more complete (like searching for your 100% internet match, your perfect swipe right, or hunting for your soulmate's eyes across a crowded room)...

...I invite you to imagine Love in a different light.

Imagine that Love is the very nature and essence of the Universe itself.

You can see examples of this all around...

...planets and galaxies circling in cosmic attraction, trees reaching up to embrace the sky, or the wind caressing your skin.

Now, imagine that you aren’t separate from this Universe. You’re actually an integral part of it.

That would mean that whatever this Universe is, you are too.

If Love is the nature and essence of the Universe, then Love is the nature and essence of who you are.

From this place, then, imagine what it would mean to “be” love.

Not to love, or be loved, but to BE love.

What if you embraced the notion that you were Love itself…you being Love?

Being Love, how would you express yourself?

Being Love, what would be the quality of your connections with others?

Being Love, how would you care for you?

Your coaching assignment for this week is simple.

As you move about your day, ask yourself, “How am I called to be love in this moment?”

And then go and be that divine expression.

Simply, Be Love.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

The trap of being too comfortable

2/6/2018

Picture
Recently, I met a young woman who shared with me her dream. I’ll call her Francis. For years, Francis had wanted to start her own social enterprise where she could work with special needs children.

When I asked her what might be stopping her from pursuing this dream, she sheepishly replied, “Because I’ve become too comfortable with my life, and it takes too much energy to change.”

I’ve heard this very same sentiment come out of the mouths of many people I’ve worked with.

I call this the trap of becoming too comfortable.

You might be familiar with some of these scenarios of past clients:

  • Jeff took a job in the corporate world because he thought that’s what one does after going to college. He made a decent amount of money and had his health insurance covered. Despite this security, he hated his work. He didn’t explore other career options because he didn’t want to give up the money and benefits in his job.

  • After working for years at a non-profit, Maria started her own consulting business working with non-profits. She felt the calling to do “her own thing” so she started her own business. But she never took the time to figure out what her “thing” was, so she continued doing the same kind of work she was familiar with, even though it didn’t excite her anymore. She identified her work as based on her current level of skills, and disregarded her passion.

  • On the outside, Lisa seems like she has it all together. She’s a successful businesswoman who travels and speaks to audiences all over the country. On the inside, she’s burnt out, and she had been burning out for the last few years. She achieved a life that many people would love to have, but it was a life she didn’t want anymore.

For Jeff, Maria, Lisa and Francis, they each found themselves in the trap of becoming too comfortable.

When you become too comfortable, life becomes stagnant.

You know what happens to water when it becomes stagnant and doesn’t move? It starts to attract bugs, parasites, and bacteria. The water becomes a breeding ground for disease and danger.

The same thing can happen if your life becomes stagnant.

If you don’t invite a fresh flowing of new energy, you become susceptible to dis-ease and burnout.

For your coaching assignment for this week, let’s see if any part of your life might be feeling a little too comfortable:

  • Is there anywhere in your life where you’re feeling the urge to change it up?
  • Do you feel an itch to try something new?
  • Are you finding yourself resistant or not wanting to deal with some area of your life?

If you answered yes to any of these, you may be experiencing some stagnancy in your life. You might have unwittingly found yourself in the trap of being too comfortable.

If you answered no to all of these, then you might have the right amount of flow and new energy circulating in your life.

The invitation is to check in and ask yourself these questions every so often. Stagnancy has a way of creeping in without you realizing it.

At the heart of this is this spiritual truth:

We are evolutionary beings living in an ever-evolving Universe.

Growing, evolving and expanding are the central impulse to all of Life itself.

How are you being called to grow today?

Abundant Blessings and Namaste.
