![]() Recently, I’ve taken up cardio kickboxing. Believe me, it’s quite a workout. Jabs, upper cuts, side kicks, right hooks, left hooks, jumping rope. By the end of the hour I’m drenched in sweat. What surprised me, though, was how much I enjoyed this type of exercise. I feel so alive! And it’s not only me. Everyone in the class is buzzing. You can feel the vibrant energy in the room. There’s a spiritual lesson here, and the mystic theologian Howard Thurman captures it beautifully: “Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” Even though I love cardio kickboxing, I know there are others who wouldn’t touch it with a ten-foot pole. Some people love swimming. Others enjoy playing hockey. Each one of us has an affinity with some things and not with others. When you ask yourself what makes you come alive, you tune into your uniqueness. You are an individualized expression of the Divine. Only you can be you. One of my clients had shared with me that she wanted to have a fit and healthy body, but she hated the idea of going to the gym. So I asked her what kinds of activities she enjoyed doing. Her eyes lit up and she said she loved salsa dancing. Now she regularly goes salsa dancing. Not only is she seeing changes in her body, but she’s also feeling more confident in her everyday life. You see, choosing to come alive means letting go of the should’s in your life. I should go to the gym because that’s what everyone else does to get fit. I should stay in a job I hate because any job is better than no job. I should settle for less because (fill in the blank with whatever excuse someone else told you). You may not realize it, but these should’s weigh down on you. Other people’s expectations, and maybe your own expectations, become an invisible burden. If it doesn’t feel true for you, then you’re allowing someone else’s directive energy into your field. When you come alive, you are a walking field of high and loving vibration. You radiate. And your energy inspires others. For your coaching assignment this week, contemplate this thought.
In other words, where in your life are you being called to come alive? Once you tune into your answer, go do it. The world needs you, in only the way that YOU can be you. I’d love to hear what comes up for you when you contemplate the idea of coming alive. Please leave a comment below.
