What books are you reading?

A client asked me recently what books I'm reading. I thought I'd share with you the stack of books I have on my desk at the moment:
  • How to Change Your Life, Ernest Holmes
  • The Gifts of Imperfection, Brené Brown
  • The $100 Startup, Chris Guillebeau
  • The 80/20 Principle, Rich Koch
  • Dying To Be Me: My Journey from Cancer, to Near Death, to True Healing, Anita Moorjani
  • Book Yourself Solid, Michael Port
  • Daring Greatly, Brené Brown
  • The Lean Startup, Eric Ries
  • Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less, Greg McKeown
  • Privileged Son: Otis Chandler and the Rise and Fall of the LA Times Dynasty, Dennis McDougal
A mix of spirituality, business, inspiration and political intrigue. These are the books that help me to expand my consciousness.

Jim Rohn offers this famous quote: "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with."

This quote emphasizes that who you spend your time with affects your consciousness. I would say that the same thing applies to what you feed your mind....in this case, books!

What are you reading these days? If you're reading books, what kind of books? Maybe you're reading magazines or newspapers. Or perhaps you're catching most of your reading through Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter or the internet.

When you look at what you're reading, what comes up for you?

Are you feeding your mind uplifting, supportive and expansive thoughts and stories? Or are you nourishing yourself with scandalous tabloids? Take note of the mind "food" you are feeding yourself.

Reading has the opportunity to be a spiritual practice.

Reading as a spiritual practice can engage your mind to embrace an expansive and wider world of possibilities. It holds the possibility for you to remember and re-affirm the truth of who you are.

For your coaching assignment for this week, reflect on what kinds of reading you're feeding your mind. Ask yourself these questions:
  • Does what you're reading add nutritious value to your life?
  • If so, how is your reading expanding your view of your own life and the world around you?
  • If not, what can you do to shift your behavior to allow more supportive writings into your environment?
  • If you could recommend one book for someone else to read, what would be that book, and why would you recommend it?

When you choose readings that uplift you and and when you see the greater possibilities for good in the world, then reading becomes a spiritual practice.

If you open to the idea of reading as a spiritual practice, then see what you learn about yourself and your world in the process. Even this act of self-awareness opens you to greater possibilities.

I'd love to hear what books you're reading and what books you'd recommend to others. Please leave a comment below.

Abundant Blessings.
